Legislative Updates It’s Not Over Yet! Act Now to Prevent Hunger & Homelessness Before Sunday Christina Wong April 24, 2021 Share on Twitter Share on Facebook Share on LinkedIn Share on Email We are in the final hours of the 2021 legislative session but it’s not over yet! Two bills that are critical to our agenda to provide relief to Washingtonians struggling with hunger and at risk of homelessness as a result of the economic crisis caused by the pandemic need action before the scheduled end of the legislative session at midnight on Sunday evening. The first bill is HB 1277 which will provide sustainable funds to prevent homelessness, including rental assistance and support for permanent supportive housing. This is crucial to preventing increased hunger and homelessness once our eviction moratorium ends and to keep renters who have exhausted savings and assets still housed when the infusion of federal funds for these purposes has dried up. The bill has already passed out of the House and needs a vote off the Senate floor to stay alive. The second bill is SB 5096 which would establish a 7% tax on the most extraordinary profits from capital gains. This tax would be paid by only the wealthiest 1% (those whose yearly income is more than $660,000) yet would generate revenue to pay for childcare, food, and housing resources available to 100% of Washingtonians when struggling with economic setbacks. This bill has passed out of both the Senate and the House thanks to steadfast support from individuals calling on lawmakers. The Senate and House have worked out an agreement on final language and a floor vote is expected sometime today. Let’s bring on the friendly encouragement for lawmakers to get this bill over the finish line! Please don’t delay-take a few minutes to take action on these bills TODAY! What You Can Do
